3 Shower Leaks You Should Check For

You should always try to isolate the cause of a leak in your shower because the amount of damage that can be done by such leaks is great. This is because you use the shower daily. This article discusses some of the places you should pay attention to as you trace the leak to its source.

The Shower Pan

Have you been noticing some water puddles underneath your shower pan? Don't assume that those leaks are from the shower pan itself. Perform the following test to confirm or rule out a leak in the shower pan. Plug drain of the shower pan before you open the faucet to allow some water to pool in the pan. Note the level of that water and wait for some hours. Any reduction in the level of the water will confirm that the pan leaks. Arrange to replace it quickly before those leaks damage the bathroom floor.

The Shower Drain

The puddles underneath the shower pan could be originating from a leak in the shower drain. Confirming this suspicion will take some time since it involves allowing the wetness to dry off. Use a fan to accelerate this drying process. Next, get some water in a bucket. Get this water from another faucet, such as the one in the kitchen. This will prevent any spills from compromising your results. Next, take a funnel and pour that water carefully down the drain. Observe underneath the shower pan for any new wetness there. What you see will confirm whether the culprit is the drain or something else.

The Shower Door

The water leaks that you are observing may be originating from a defect in the door. For example, the holes that are intended to drain water back into your shower stall may have become clogged with dirt. This can make water to overflow from the rail of the door to the exterior of the shower area. Kneel and check those holes. Unclog them and use a drill to widen them so that they can drain the water in the rail quickly. Check the caulking on the perimeter of the shower door. Reapply it in case the old one had deteriorated and cracked.

Leaks can also stem from other defects in the shower, such as a defective shower head. It may, therefore, be better for you to call a plumber to conduct a thorough inspection so that all possible leaks are fixed in one session.
